Appvion plans to consolidate carbonless paper manufacturing operations in US

PKBR Staff Writer Published 13 November 2017

Paper manufacturing firm Appvion is planning to consolidate its carbonless paper manufacturing operations in US.

As part of the plans, the company will consolidate majority of its carbonless paper coating and rewinding operations at its plant in Appleton, Wisconsin, to its integrated pulp and paper mill in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania.

The consolidation work, which is expected to begin in January 2018 and complete in the third quarter of same year, also involves relocation of its Appleton plant’s sheeting operations to Appvion- operated facility near the mill.

In addition to affecting approximately 200 jobs, the consolidation plan will result in closure of three under-utilized coaters and related rewinding and sheeting equipment at the Appleton Plant.

However, Appvion said it plans to retain approximately 300 Appleton plant employees to continue producing the thermal paper products and some carbonless and specialty coated grades.

Appvion CEO Kevin Gilligan said: "Our consolidation plan is an important operational improvement initiative designed to enhance Appvion's competitive position in the carbonless paper market.

"This move will allow Appvion to most effectively serve current and future demand for carbonless products and maintain our commitment to a market that we have been proud to serve since our company helped introduce this product 63 years ago."

Appvion said that the consolidation plan is a part of its effort to increase the efficiencies of its manufacturing and logistics operations and position itself for long-term success.

Upon completion of the consolidation work, Appvion’s facility in Roaring Spring will become the hub for its carbonless and specialty paper production.
